The unfortunate reality of men is that sometimes, they are a lost and clueless bunch. Countless opportunities have been lost by a guy’s inability to read the signs, particularly non-verbal clues that indicate a woman’s interest. Being able to notice green flags on the first date is crucial if both parties have any hope of starting a relationship.

Men, however, read women just about as well as they do ancient hieroglyphics. Men are simple creatures who prefer not to exert two IQ points of brain power when dealing with the nuances of love. It baffles them to no end as to why a simple “I like you” has to be packaged so mysteriously as if delivering a top secret coded message.

Men and Women’s Brains

There are a multitude of factors why men are clueless with women. The first is how men's brains are wired differently from women’s brains - totally different!

Men unpackage things in a straightforward, logical manner. If it doesn’t make sense, it doesn’t register.

Women have a more colored perception of things. They associate behaviors and actions with feelings and emotions.

The same can be applied with speech. A man will take words at face-value. “She said she’s fine, therefore she must be!”

For women, the message is more than simply words. It’s the tone and what they are thinking and feeling the instance they say it. “I’m fine...but I’m really not because I’m so stressed and you don’t seem to care.”

Further complicating things are the individual’s upbringing, temperament, and love language. No wonder dating is so complicated! Unfortunately, they don’t teach first date tips at school, so you have to learn everything by trial and error.

So when you are on your first date with a lovely, beautiful woman AND she happens to like you, be sure not to miss any of the following green flags:

1. She’s all dolled up.

She’s wearing that new dress that’s revealing enough to be sexy, but covers enough not to be slutty. She spent two hours on her makeup and hair. Her purse and shoes match perfectly. See her pendant? It's an internally flawless Swarovksy. Her earrings? Bracelet? Sparkling!

Inside the man’s head: “Wow, pretty.”

When a girl dresses up like a fashion model, you have to pay attention. So why is it that their best efforts are often ignored? One reason could be that men simply aren’t keen when it comes to fashion.

Unless the guy grew up in a household of women, it would be hard for him to grasp what goes into the beautification process. By spending time around women, one would learn the intricacies of cosmetics, hair care, and fashion. Sadly, men tend to be simple and practical when it comes to fashion - a pair of jeans, comfortable shoes, and a shirt.

For grooming, most men apply the absolute minimum standard. It takes three seconds to comb their hair. Shaving? You must be kidding. Soap and shampoo? They're’ the same, aren't they?

Guys who aren’t dating-savvy need to pay more attention. If the girl looks great, it probably took her a huge amount of effort. That’s a green flag for you.

2. Watch that smile.

Pay good attention to her facial expressions throughout the evening, she will often say more than words can ever express. When she is smiling radiantly, you have to know she’s into you. More importantly, watch the eyes. They say the eyes are the window to a person’s soul. If she is making constant eye contact AND you see the joy in her eyes, she just might as well say, “You make my heart flutter!”

Now, if you’ve been spending quality time with your friends, you’d know that none of them would look at you like that. Sure, you smile, laugh, and enjoy the good times together, but the fixation of the eyes, the amusement at your corny jokes, those are things only a woman who fancies you would show.

3. She stays close to you and tends to face you.

When you two are walking together, notice the proximity she keeps to you. Interested women tend to stay closer to you, as if being pulled. She also orients her body towards yours. See where she faces, if she constantly opens her body towards you. If a girl isn’t interested or is even repulsed, she would definitely want some distance between the both of you.

If she subtly brushes against your arm, or innocently makes body contact, then brother, she is flirting with you.

4. She laughs at your jokes.

You’re no stand up comedian. Your own mother has on many occasions told you you’re the most unfunny person she knows. Yet your date seems to get you. Who knew she’d get the “Why did the chicken cross the road” joke? How is this even possible?

Because she is throwing you a green flag. To your face.

5. She’s engaged in the conversation.

This is something many guys don’t get because it’s just talking and having a decent conversation, right? The thing is, girls who aren’t interested don’t want to spend a lot of time talking to you. If you get one word answers, it either means she doesn’t really like you or she has a speech impediment.

Men tend to think that having a fun and deep back and forth conversation is just two people talking and having a good time. They fail to realize the sparks of chemistry in the air. To some, talking is talking. It doesn’t mean anything deeper than friendship level.

This is where they get it wrong. So the next time you and your date are having a really good time talking, it means she likes you.

If there is any dating advice some men deserve to have, it’s knowing how to read a woman. It’s unlikely that such a skill will ever be perfected, but it’s something worth putting effort into. When you don’t know what to expect on a first date, you become nervous and fearful. Otherwise, good or even flirtatious signs are written off because you can’t see the reason behind them.

Reading body language and facial expressions goes well beyond any first date. Being able to understand non-verbal cues is an integral part of maintaining a healthy relationship. So the next time you go on a date, be prepared. If green flags come flying your way, then keep it up and don’t let go!
